We come to you: recognising the challenges of access to quality wound specialists

Hard-to-heal wounds affect not only patients' quality of life but also place a significant burden on healthcare systems around the world. The incidence of hard-to-heal wounds continues to rise wherever the age of the population is increasing. Complicating matters further is the fact that access to quality wound care is significantly impacted by the patient's place of residence, degree of physical mobility, social support network (e.g., transportation), or financial resources, including healthcare coverage. Any one of these factors can determine the patient's ability to be seen in a bricks-and-mortar private or hospital-affiliated outpatient clinic specialising in advanced wound care. Due to the medical need to reach patients who cannot travel regularly to traditional outpatient clinics, post-acute wound care services, also known as ‘mobile wound care’, have expanded across the US. This expansion has increased access for this group of patients to innovative technologies, such as cellular, acellular, matrix-like products (CAMPs), and near-infrared spectroscopy.
